the road to mandalay

A couple of years ago I stumbled across a web site for river boat cruising in Myanmar (Burma) and the seed of travelling the Irrawaddy River, Rudyard Kipling’s Road to Mandalay was sown.                                                                                                           Now with one more sleep it is finally going to happen.

On this VERY hot (44C) day in Perth, I’m sitting under the ceiling fan writing this and looking forward to the next 24 hours which will involve two flights, taxi ride and the first night in Yangon (Rangoon) at The Strand Hotel. One of the ‘grand old dames’ built by the Sarkies Brothers and sister to The Raffles in Singapore and The Eastern and Oriental Hotel in Penang it sounds like the perfect start to three weeks in ‘The Golden Land’.     There will be markets and mohinga, pagodas and peacocks, giant pots and gold leaf, chinthes and cheroots, thanaka and a teak bridge , longyis and lacquerware and a cabin on the RV Katha Pandaw.

See you on the river!
